Went The Day Well? – YES

September is when I really need to put my head down and start working all the hours of the day and weekend with yearling sales coming thick and fast and potential horses for private sales becoming more available.

The DBS Festival Sale may not be as prestigious as other sales but suited orders from many of my clients, consequently I bought 9 yearlings for Bryan Smart, Mark Usher, Marcus Tregoning & one to go to Italy.  They were headed by the Monsieur Bond filly out of Bond Shakira for £20,000 – coincidently I had bought both the sire and dam as yearlings!

Goffs Orby Sale followed at which I bought 2 yearlings.  Fawzi Nass bought a Shamardal half-brother to his good Bahraini horse Finest Reserve for €50,000. The colt will go to Brian Meehan who trains Shumoos & Strawberrydaiquiri for him.  I was very disappointed that the colt had not been made eligible for the Yearling Bonus.  The vendor thought he would make more but I think buyers are favouring Bonus horses – it certainly effects my valuations.  I also bought a filly by Mount Nelson out of Give A Whistle for 42,000.  Newsells Park Stud had bred this yearling out of a mare I bought them but sold it as a foal.  They liked her so much that they decided to buy this half-sister to Gr.3 winner Pasar Silbano, and recent 2yo Listed winner Gerfalcon, back.

On the racecourse – SHUMOOS broke her pattern race duck by taking the GROUP 3 Sirenia Stakes over 6 furlongs (second was Vocational – daughter of Dam purchase Carry On Katie).  The Brian Meehan trained Shumoos, who was second in the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot, will now go straight to the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket.

PACHATTACK continued her upward progress with a good second in the GRADE 1 Personal Ensign Invitation Stakes at Saratoga for trainer Gerard Butler & owner Michael Deegan.  Her next race is likely to be the Spinster Stakes at Keeneland before a tilt at the Breeders’ Cup.

STRAWBERRYDAIQUIRI bounced right back to form when third in a tough renewal of the GROUP 1 Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket.  She was second in this race in 2011.

WENTTHEDAYWELL was an eye-catching second in a hot mile maiden at Haydock.  He was immediately chased by Team Valour boss Barry Irwin who apparently thought his sectional timings were very good.  After a lot of hard haggling a strong price was paid for this 26,000 Guineas yearling purchase which put a big smile on owner Mark Ford’s face, especially as he’s staying in for 25% of the colt when he races in USA.  He will be aimed at the Kentucky Derby!

MARISTAR – another G. Butler/M. Deegan filly got her first piece of Black Type when a very decent second in the GRADE 3 Washington Park Stakes over 9 furlongs at Arlington Park.  This daughter of Champion Jewel Princess looks destined to win nice races and is already worth a good deal more than her yearling purchase price.

On the Broodmare front – Burn Baby Burn’s daughter ONE CLEVER CAT won the GROUP 3 Prix La Coupe de Maisons-Laffitte after many previous Group race placings; Forever Bond’s son HOOF IT was beaten in to third in a blanket finish for the GROUP 1 Haydock Sprint Cup – surely a Group 1 win is within his grasp?
